htaccess mod rewrite to add in www redirects back to the root

I have added:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^[^.]+.[^.]+$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301]

to my .htaccess file so if the url doesnt have www in it adds it. However, if someone goes directly to a page that doesnt happen to have www in, it redirects back to the root?

For example if someone goes to https://example.net/catagory or http://example.com/catagory it redirects to https://www.example.net

Can anyone suggest why this might be happening?

I'd like the example to redirect to https://www.example.net/catagory rather than back to the root when www isnt included.
